Sin dall’inizio del romanzo, quando si apre lo scenario sulle splendide feste nella lussuosissima dimora di Gatsby, su di lui circolano voci tutt’altro che gentili: ha ucciso un uomo… nasconde la sua identità di figlio di un tedesco con losco passato… sicuramente gestisce attività illecite. Praticamente tutti gli ospiti che accorrono alle sue danze pensano, e dicono, male di lui. Una vera folla di ospiti, in gran parte sconosciuti al proprietario… Subito abbiamo il quadro del mondo che Fitzgerald rappresenta: un mondo senza midollo, senza valori, senza moralità .
From the beginning of the novel, when the scenario opens on the splendid parties in Gatsby’s luxurious home, rumors are circulating about him that are anything but kind: he killed a man … he hides his identity as the son of a German with a shady past… definitely runs illegal activities. Virtually all the guests who flock to his dances think, and say, badly of him. A veritable crowd of guests, largely unknown to the owner… Immediately we have the picture of the world that Fitzgerald represents: a world without marrow, without values, without morality.
